21 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer Before Booking
You have found a photographer whose work you love. Now you need to make sure the business side is solid, the personality fits, and the logistics work for your specific day. Here are the 21 questions I recommend every couple ask before signing a contract, organized by category. I am including what good answers look like so you know what to listen for.
01.Experience and Style
1. How many weddings have you photographed total? Look for at least 50 for a seasoned professional. Under 20 means they are still building experience, which is fine if the price reflects that.
2. How many weddings do you shoot per year? 20 to 35 is a healthy range. Under 10 might mean this is a side gig. Over 50 risks burnout and rushed editing.
3. Have you shot at my venue before? Venue familiarity means they know the light, the layout, and the best spots without wasting your time scouting on the day.
4. How would you describe your photography style? Listen for specifics, not buzzwords. 'Documentary with directed portraits at golden hour' is better than 'I capture your love story.'
5. Can I see 2 to 3 full wedding galleries? This is the most important question on this list. Full galleries show consistency, not just highlights.
02.Logistics and Coverage
6. How many hours of coverage is included? Make sure it covers from getting ready through your exit or last dance.
7. Do you bring a second shooter? For weddings over 100 guests or with separate getting-ready locations, a second shooter is essential.
8. What happens if you get sick or have an emergency? The answer should involve a specific backup plan with named colleagues, not 'I have never missed a wedding.'
9. What equipment do you use and do you have backups? Dual card slots, two camera bodies, and multiple lenses are the minimum for a professional.
10. Do you have liability insurance? Yes is the only acceptable answer for venue work.
03.Deliverables and Timeline
11. How many final edited images will I receive? 500 to 800 for a full day is standard. Under 300 is light. Over 1,000 might mean less selective editing.
12. When will I receive my gallery? 6 to 10 weeks is industry standard. Get it in writing.
13. How are photos delivered? Online gallery with download is standard. Ask if it expires and whether you get full-resolution files.
14. Do you offer albums or prints? Some photographers include them, others offer them as add-ons. Know what is in your package.
15. Do I get printing rights? You should have full personal-use rights to print, share, and post your images without restrictions.
04.Money and Contract
16. What is the total cost including tax and travel? No surprises. Get the all-in number before you sign.
17. What is your payment schedule? 2 to 3 payments spread over the engagement period is standard. Avoid anyone who demands full payment upfront.
18. What is your cancellation and refund policy? Life happens. Know what you are agreeing to.
19. Are there any additional fees I should know about? Overtime rates, travel fees, second shooter fees, album design fees. Ask now.
05.The Personal Fit
20. How do you handle shy or camera-nervous couples? A good answer involves patience, gentle direction, and making people comfortable rather than forcing poses. Listen for empathy, not ego.
21. What do you love about shooting weddings? This is the gut-check question. You want someone who is genuinely excited to be there, not someone who treats your wedding as another transaction. Listen for passion, specifics, and warmth.
